Job Description

The Intermountain Medical Group Geographic Medical Director works with the Geographic Leadership Team to coordinate and oversee the medical affairs and operations of the clinicians and clinics within a Medical Group geography. The Geographic Medical Director partners with the Specialty Based Care, Community Based Care, Medical Group, and Geographic Leadership Teams to develop geographic plans for the delivery of services to patients. In conjunction with members of other leadership teams, the Medical Director is accountable for the overall success of the Geography, including system and Medical Group goal achievement and alignment. This position is responsible for exemplifying and communicating the organization Mission, Vision, and Values.

Essential Job Duties

  • Geographic Operations

  • a) Maintains an effective ongoing day-to-day relationship with the Medical Group Geographic Operations Officers and Leadership Team to address matters of mutual interest in their shared responsibility to provide the appropriate support for the delivery of services within a Geography.

  • b) Regularly meets with clinicians within the Geography to communicate and/or resolve clinical or administrative matters.
  • c) Promotes and ensures effective functional relationships between clinicians and other caregivers in the Geography.
  • d) Conducts Annual Professional Conversations, as needed, in support of other physician leaders and clinical service lines.
  • e) Works with Geographic Leadership Team and other leaders to resolve clinician issues that may arise.
  • f) Assists in the implementation of professional staff policies and practices.
  • g) Provides input on the Geography's physician and Advanced Practice Clinician (APC) staffing needs in collaboration with Geographic Leadership Team and service line leaders.
  • h) Participates in the recruitment and onboarding of physicians and APCs.
  • i) Oversees the Geographic activities that promote and support a positive, collaborative culture.
  • j) Facilitates physician and APC leadership skills development in the Geography.
  • k) Collaborates with Geographic Leadership Team and clinical service line leaders to develop and implement strategies that improve safety, quality, experience, and access.
  • l) Ensures optimization of Electronic Medical Record use by caregivers in the Geography.
  • m) Within the framework of One Intermountain, represents and advocates for the unique needs of the Geography.
  • n) Regularly holds and leads the Geographic Leadership Council.
  • Financial Performance

  • a) In collaboration with the Geographic Leadership Team, achieves agreed upon financial performance objectives of the Geography.

  • b) Assists the Geographic Leadership Team in the preparation of annual and long-range budgets and regularly monitors performance against these budget projections, focusing heavily on clinical areas.
  • Risk Management

  • a) Participates in liability claims review process. Advises and supports the legal department on geographic and individual clinician litigation issues.

  • b) Ensures that the Geography is actively engaged in and participates in organization Zero Harm processes and policies.
  • System Responsibilities

  • a) Works with system and Medical Group leaders and leadership teams to ensure that patients and consumers receive the best possible care in all clinical settings.

  • b) Serves as a member of the Physician Leadership Council.
  • c) Responsible for initiatives as assigned by the Medical Group Senior Medical Director or the Chief Physician Executive of Intermountain Healthcare.
  • d) Works collaboratively with system leadership to lead and promote the Fundamentals of Extraordinary Care within the Clinically Integrated Network.

Minimum Requirements

  • MD or DO. Education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Degree will be verified.
  • Current board certification in a specialty.
  • Active Utah Medical Licensure, or in process of obtaining licensure.
  • Three years of medical practice experience.
  • Experience in leading physicians and advanced practice clinicians.
  • Experience in a role requiring a collaborative style and effective work with colleagues.
  • Experience in a role requiring effective conflict resolution skills to work effectively with difficult issues.
  • Experience in a role requiring effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Sound understanding of modern health care economics and knowledge of financial principles.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Fundamentals of Extraordinary Care; safety, quality, patient experience, access, and stewardship.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Intermountain's Mission, Vision, and Values.

Physical Requirements

  • Interact with others requiring employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information.
  • Operate computers, telephones, office equipment, and manipulate paper requiring the ability to move fingers and hands.
  • See and read computer monitors and documents.
  • Remain sitting or standing for long periods of time to perform work on a computer, telephone, or other equipment.
  • Interact frequently with patient care providers, patients, and visitors requiring employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manipulate, with hands and fingers, complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, etc.

Preferred Requirements

  • Physician governance experience, such as participation on a Medical Group Board of Directors.
  • Managed care knowledge and experience.
  • Experience in the management of clinicians and administrative resources.
  • Development and implementation of clinical and business quality improvement initiatives.
  • Knowledge of sophisticated clinical and management information system.
